Can You Switch From an Apple Day to a Cookie a Day to “Keep the Doctor Away?”

Can You Switch From an Apple Day to a Cookie a Day to “Keep the Doctor Away?”

You’ve probably heard the aphorism, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

Undoubtedly, most of us heard this phrase at least once or twice growing up, but did you ever ask yourself HOW an apple a day can keep the doctor away?

For starters, apples are very nutritious, containing important minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins such as vitamin C, copper, potassium, and vitamin K. Apples are also a good source of fiber, which has been shown to aid in digestion. Last but certainly not least, apples are known to support weight loss, promote brain function, and reduce the risk of diabetes -- and the list goes on and on.

While we know that apples are good for us, how can we be sure that they’ll “keep the doctor away?” Let’s get to the core of the matter (no pun intended) and briefly look into a couple of studies done on this topic.

Interesting Studies on Apples & Health

The first study was conducted at the University of Michigan School of Nursing, where researcher Matthew Davis, Ph.D., and several co-authors investigated the health habits of 8,399 participants. The researchers compared daily apple eaters with non-apple eaters.

Participants were considered to have eaten an apple if they consumed 149 grams of raw apple.

At the conclusion of the study, it was discovered that there was no correlation between consuming 149 grams of apple daily and reduced needs for medical checkups. However, one positive result uncovered was that those who ate the required amount of daily apple decreased their need for prescription medications.

Still, even with all the health benefits apples offer, eating one a day doesn’t really cut it if you’re looking to reap the biggest health benefits. Researchers have found, however, that when you eat an apple a day along with other fruits and vegetables, you will definitely increase your chances of keeping the doctor away.

How Do Fruits & Veggies Keep Me Healthy?

The answer lies in the flavonoids and different types of antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables. Flavonoids give fruits and vegetables their bright colors, and have also been proven to have a positive effect on our bodies.
